Japan has a reputation for being expensive. In reality, with a weak yen and good preparation, a 2-week trip costs between $2,000 and $4,000 per person including flights, depending on your comfort level. Here are realistic ranges for each spending category, and a method to estimate your actual budget.
The budget at a glance
| Category | Budget | Mid-range | Premium |
|---|---|---|---|
| Round-trip flight | $700 - $950 | $900 - $1,300 | $1,800+ |
| Accommodation (14 nights) | $450 - $800 | $900 - $1,500 | $2,200+ |
| Transport in Japan | $150 - $280 | $280 - $450 | $450+ |
| Food | $350 - $500 | $500 - $800 | $1,000+ |
| Activities and sights | $100 - $220 | $220 - $450 | $550+ |
| Estimated total | $1,800 - $2,750 | $2,800 - $4,500 | $6,000+ |
These figures are per person. Couples share accommodation, which noticeably lowers the per-person cost in the mid-range tier.
Flights: lock this in first
The flight is often a third of your total budget. The best fares appear 4 to 8 months before departure, outside cherry blossom season and Golden Week (late April - early May). Booking late usually means paying 20-30% more.
Accommodation: the most variable category
- Budget: hostels, capsule hotels, and basic business hotels ($30-$55 per night)
- Mid-range: well-located business hotels ($65-$110 per night)
- Experience: one or two nights in a ryokan with kaiseki dinner ($160-$330 per person) : plan it as a highlight, not the norm
The smart move: prefer a simple hotel near a train station over a fancier one far from transit that costs you time and train fares every day.
Transport: don’t pay for a pass you won’t use
Since the 2023 price increase, the national JR Pass is no longer automatically worth it. On a trip concentrated in Kansai or Kyushu, a regional pass or individual tickets often come out cheaper.
That is exactly the calculation the JR Pass calculator built into Ryokô Planner does: from the stages of your itinerary, it compares individual tickets, the JR Pass, and regional passes. For more depth, read our JR Pass and regional passes guide.
Food: the most flexible category
You can eat very well in Japan for little money: a bowl of ramen costs $6-$9, a teishoku set meal $8-$13, a konbini bento $4-$6. Plan $28-$50 per day mixing convenience stores and restaurants, more if you’re aiming for fine dining.
How Ryokô Planner helps you prepare your budget
Ryokô Planner doesn’t calculate your overall budget, but it helps you build the foundation to estimate it:
- Build your itinerary in the app: stages, nights per city, planned activities : you see concretely what your trip will cover.
- Check your transport with the JR Pass calculator: you instantly know whether a pass is worth it for your routes, without buying one you won’t use.
- Follow the preparation checklist so you don’t forget side costs: insurance, eSIM, power adapter.
A well-built itinerary often saves several hundred dollars, especially by avoiding the wrong transport pass or unnecessary back-and-forth trips.
